Open Call to Artists
The mission of the UConn Stamford Art Gallery is to offer a welcoming environment that attracts artists and members of the community to high caliber exhibitions and programs. The Gallery supports the University’s educational mission by stimulating active learning and dialogue about the arts and the creative process.
Gallery exhibits. UConn Stamford Gallery showcases both emerging and established artists, with a special emphasis on the works and themes of traditionally underrepresented groups, local/regional artists, interdisciplinary artworks, and diverse mediums and perspectives (see the Archive for examples of past exhibitions).
The Gallery is a large, inviting space located off the Main Concourse, which serves as the heart of the campus, located in downtown Stamford, with easy access to parking and public transportation. Visitors enter the Gallery from the Concourse or from a second entrance that is visible from Washington Boulevard and lit by a dramatic three-story light spine. The Gallery is approximately 25 feet wide by 70 feet long. One end of the Gallery is three stories tall, accommodating large works to be hung on the walls or placed in the area. The ceiling of this section is a large skylight that washes the space in natural light. See photos of the space.
Standing Call to Artists. The Gallery’s Advisory Board selects works and collections for exhibition. The Gallery hosts approximately eight shows per year, including an annual juried photography show, one or more group shows by local guilds or artist collectives, themed exhibits, and solo shows. We have a standing Call to Artists who wish to submit their works for consideration. Interested artists can download and mail an application by U.S. mail or submit an application electronically. Applications sent by mail should provide the Advisory Board with a proposal for exhibition, including:
(1) A cover letter or email
(2) Artist’s biography / resume
(3) Samples of work submitted for consideration
(4) A general proposal for exhibition, subject to change.
The Advisory Board reviews submissions on a rolling basis at its monthly meetings (with exceptions in summer) and attempts to provide artists with timely feedback regarding their submissions. Gallery exhibits are generally booked 12 to 18 months in advance and artists are expected to honor agreements to show during a particular period.
Gallery Operations. The Gallery is open from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday, Friday until 5 pm, and Saturday until noon. At the artist’s discretion, exhibited works are available for sale; the Gallery requires a commission of 30% in the form of a contribution to The University. Artists whose work is selected for exhibition must complete and sign a Loan Agreement and Art Insurance Information forms. Advertising, promotion, and catering costs related to show are not the responsibility of the Gallery. Artists are responsible for the hanging and de-installation of shows.
