Education:

D.Ed., Penn State University, Computer Science, 1974

Background:

Gerald L. Engel received his bachelors degree from Hampden-Sydney College, masters from Louisiana State University and doctorate in computer science from Pennsylvania State University. 

Gerald L. Engel is the Leonhardt Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Connecticut, Stamford.  His research interests involve computer science and engineering education as well as social, ethical and professional issues in the computing fields.

Professor Engel has been active in the accreditation of academic programs in computing from the beginning of such efforts.  He served on the working group that developed into the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB).  He was the first chair of the Computer Science Accreditation Commission (CSAC).  Additionally he has been a program evaluator for both CSAC and the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET.  Professor Engel chaired the task force that led to the CSAB/ABET integration.  Additionally he has been actively involved in the development of curriculum guidelines in computer science and computer science and engineering.  Among the numerous awards for his work has been the 2000 Merwin Distinguished Service Award of the IEEE Computer Society  and 1999 Meritorious Service Award of the IEEE Education Society. 

Gerald L. Engel served as President of the IEEE Computer Society and President of the IEEE Society on the Social Implications of Technology.  Additionally he has served as a Director of the IEEE and ABET.  He is currently chair of the Conferences Committee of the IEEE and a Trustee of the International Federation for Information Processing. 

He was elected IEEE Fellow in 2002 “for contributions to computer science and engineering education.”  He is also a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and CSAB Inc. .
