Obtained his PhD in 2004 from the University of Porto, after conducting most of the practical work at the Marine Biotechnology Laboratory (UCONN, Stamford): “Studies on the ecophysiology and biochemistry of Porphyra dioica Brodie et Irvine in culture”. He is now a post-doc in CIMAR (Centre for Marine and Environmental Research, Porto, Portugal) were he continues to work on the physiology of Porphyra and its application in integrated aquaculture systems. His main areas of interest are seaweed physiology and aquaculture, although he maintains, since his pre-graduation years, regularly participation in ecology research projects and, more recently, in the study of the invasive seaweed Grateloupia turututu in Portugal. He continues his cooperation with the Marine Biotechnology Laboratory, which will include also the studies of the invasive seaweed Grateloupia, now common to both sides of the North Atlantic.

I am a researcher from the Ocean University of Qingdao, China. The international cooperative program, which allows me to work with Dr. Charles Yarish, was sponsored according to the Protocol of Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology Cooperation between US and PRC. As part of the cooperative program, I perform research work in the Marine Biotechnology Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, Stamford from Dec. 12, 2001 through Sep. 11, 2002. My research is focused on two aspects in a comparative study of Chinese Porphyra species and American native species: the development of conchocelis (sporophytic stage) and blades (gametophytic stage); nutrient uptake ability of blades from different Chinese species and American species, which is focused for the purpose of bioremediation of marine environment.
